Spring Revolution Daily News for 1 May 2024

The National Unity Government (NUG)

· On Tuesday, the NUG conducted a meeting. The Acting President of the NUG Duwa Lashi La stated that there have been a large number of militarily-liberated and militarily-controlled areas over the period of the People’s Defensive War.

· The NUG stated that they and ethnic revolution forces have been able to control and influence over 60% of the country including 5 border trade towns.

· In the press conference of the third anniversary of the NUG on Tuesday, the spokesperson of Union Prime Minister Office stated that taxes worth 22.98 million USD had been collected in 42 townships under their control in 2023.

· In the declaration on the third anniversary of the NUG, it was stated that in cooperation with ethnic partners fighting the military junta, they had set up central supervision and coordination committees, and they had been able to control and influence 60% of the whole country.

· On Tuesday, the NUG called on the public to join hands with them and the revolution forces to raise the momentum of the fight against the military junta which is on the verge of collapse.

· On Monday, there was a meeting between Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration-NUG and Township People’s Administration from Tanintharyi Region, Ayeyarwady Region, Yangon Region and Bago Region.

· At 3:00 pm Monday, there was a meeting between the NUG Central Committee on the Interim Public’s Administration and Township People’s Administration from Sagaing Region.

· In Hommalin Township of Sagaing Region, five members of Shanni National Army (SSA) under the junta army, along with weapons, defected to the Local People’s Defence Force on 24 April.

· In the press conference on Tuesday, the responsible personnel of the NUG stated that they have created the circumstances for those who have been recruited by force and brought to the frontline by the junta army to get away from the military junta.

Revolution Activities

· In Yinmabin Township of Sagaing Region, a rally named Shwe Ye Kyi was held protesting against the military dictatorship.

· In Ye-U, the junta army took away 9 local men, who had been listed for military service, from their houses at about 9:00 pm Monday.

· In Pale Township, a social group supported 10,000MMK to each of the households, fire victims in I-Yaung Village.

· In Monywa Township, there was a guerrilla attack on junta troops on their way to send rations to their force in Taung Palu Village on Sunday. Reportedly, 6 junta soldiers died.

· In Wetlet Township, there was a local battle on 26 April.

· In Myaing Township of Magway Region, a woman was found dead, naked and raped near Industry (2) on Sunday. Reportedly, she was the mother of a nurse and she had gone missing for some days.

· In Salin Township, there was a mine attack on the junta army on their way out of Tanyaung Camp on 26 April. Reportedly, 2 junta policemen died.

· In Saw Township, Gantgaw District PDF called on the members of armed forces and the public to follow local orders in the areas under No. (3) and No. (5) PDFs due to local instability.

· In Madayar Township of Mandalay Region, there were attacks on a junta vehicle and Ngar Lone Pyun Village – the junta station. Reportedly, a junta soldier died.

· In Oatpho Township of Bago Region, the PDFs conducted a mine attack on a junta troop of 20 soldiers near a local bridge on Sunday evening.

· In Thayetchaung Township of Tanintharyi Region, there were local battles for 5 consecutive days. Reportedly, 14 junta soldiers died and many others were injured.

· In Insein Township of Yangon Region, the prison staff and their associates have been selling “places” for those visiting the inmates of Insein Prison. According to Political Prisoners’ Network Myanmar, the family members of the political prisoners have had difficulty.

Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs)

· In Sisai Township of Southern Shan State, the junta army conducted attacks via drone and mortars on Winelone Village and Namtaung Village on 25 April. According to Pa-O National Liberation Army, 3 people including the children aged 6 and 8 were injured.

· In Beelin Township of Mon State, the junta army conducted an aerial bombing on Tagaylong Village at 11:30 pm Sunday for no apparent reason. According to Karen National Union (Central), the school building, shops and houses were damaged.

· In Kanpetlet Township of Chin State, Chin Brotherhood Forces seized Kyin Dway Town after attacks for four months.

· In Titain Township, 2 members of PDF – Zophai and another one from the combined forces lost lives in a battle near Maing Nwet Village on Saturday.

· In Ahm Township of Rakhine State with the junta’s Western Military Headquarters, there was heavy fighting at a local strategic point for the whole day on Monday. Reportedly, the junta army used the support of the air force.

· For the position of the Deputy Commander of Karenni National Defence Forces (8), a member was selected by vote on Sunday.

· In Northern Shan State, the military junta has been strengthening a large number of their forces. Consequently, All Burma Students’ Democratic Front limited the time to use Moemait-Twinnge Road.

The Military Council

· In Oattara Thiri Township of Naypyitaw, a law training school was opened on Monday morning. Present on the occasion was the junta leader Min Aung Hlaing.

· The junta leader claimed that it was necessary to appoint qualified legal officers to successfully implement the three pillars of the nation’s sovereignty; Executive, Legislative and Judicial with dignity.

· After having been out of public’s sight for nearly a month, the second junta leader Soe Win reappeared on Monday. In the junta propaganda media, he was seen visiting injured soldiers in Mon State.

· In the meeting with responsible personnel in Mawlamyine on Monday, the second junta leader Soe Win said that the government, the military and the public need to cooperate for current battles and it would be successful only with the cooperation of local people.

· The junta Economic Minister of Karen State claimed that after taking control of Myawaddy on Thai border, they would resume the border trade with Thailand within one month.

· According to the junta’s Internal Revenue Department under Ministry of Planning and Finance, the sale of Aungbale Lottery for April was over 5,500 million MMK.

· The junta Central Bank would sell 5 million Yuan and 30 million Baht to importers and exporters via Online Trading Platform on 2 May.

· Starting from Monday, the students, who had registered for 2024 University Entrance Exam and who had not been able to take it for various reasons, retook it at respective examination departments.

· According to the junta Ministry of Labor Affairs, the first batch of MOU workers was sent to Thailand on Monday.

· The junta Hydro-Power Department claimed that they would implement Upper Kyaing Taung Hydro Power Project for earlier completion for the electricity supply to the public.

· No. (2) Friendship Bridge connecting Myawaddy and Mae Sot, a key part in Thai-Myanmar border trade, was reopened.

· In the General Administration Department under the junta Ministry of Home Affairs, those who can bribe Director General U Myint Than get promotion and good transfers whereas those who cannot do so do not get promoted or they are even sent to dangerous areas.

· In Rakhine State, landmines have been buried on the ways in and out of Sittway City and near the junta armed forces so that the local people cannot go away.

· In Yangon and Mandalay, there have been deteriorating power outages in recent days. On the other hand, the condos and housings have bribed the electricity department for the longer power supply.

· For the parts of fighter jets and aircrafts of the junta air force which need repairing, a Russian cargo plane IL76 came to Naypyitaw Alar Air Force and collected them.

· Last week, University of London, the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) hosted the ASEAN Film Festival, which was joined by a junta delegation including the junta’s Representative to the UK Tun Aung Kyaw. Consequently, it faced a lot of criticism.

· On Tuesday, the junta army conducted an airstrike on Minbya in Rakhine State. Reportedly, 12 civilians were seriously injured and 5 houses were burnt to ashes.

Summary on 1 May

· The NUG and the ethnic revolution forces have been able to control and influence over 60% of the country. It can be said to be the progress of the revolution. However, it is necessary to uproot the military junta. The NUG must make more effort to do so.
