All schools closed and public gatherings halted due to airstrikes in Mingin Township, Sagaing Region

The National Unity Government (NUG) has temporarily closed its schools and suspended public gatherings in Mingin Township, Sagaing Region due to continuous junta airstrikes.

This was done to prevent potential incidents and ensure the safety of students and the public, according to the Mingin Township People’s Defense Force (PDF).

A Mingin Township PDF official said: “This is to prevent incidents before they happen. Conducting large gatherings using loudspeakers during times of military tension is not advised. Ensuring the safety of students is a priority. Providing security to open a school during the escalating military tension becomes challenging.”

In Mingin Township, the NUG operates 115 schools where about 1,000 teachers teach about 13,000 students.

The PDF has been proactive, providing training for students on air raid protection and constructing bomb shelters at schools. Schools are planned to reopen once the military situation stabilises.

There is considerable military tension in Mingin Township where there are 36 junta-controlled Pyu Saw Htee villages and camps. The region is experiencing ongoing ground attacks and airstrikes, contributing to an intense and volatile security environment.

“We are getting more concerned as students are unable to attend school during the academic term, as well we are getting more worried about schools being bombed. I feel insecure as I have witnessed casualties and destruction from the bombings”, said a parent in Mingin Township.

The situation escalated on 3 June when a military airstrike on Mataw Village in Mingin Township killed 29 residents.
