Spring Revolution Daily News for 5 January 2024

The National Unity Government (NUG)

· Ministry of Defence- NUG announced that the People’s Defence Force (PDF) Mandalay and Palaung State Liberation Front/ Ta’ang National Liberation Army had caught alive Second Colonel Thet Aung from the junta army in their attack on the junta base in Thanbo Village on 2 January.

· According to Dawna Column from the Southern Military Region, a combination of revolutionary forces had carried out an attack with 81mm grenades and SFZ drone on the junta army (409) on Yay-Dawei Road in Tanintharyi Region on 2 January.

· In a statement on Independence Day, the NUG mentioned that the military junta led by Min Aung Hlaing had attempted to seize power unjustly on 1 February 2021 and they had committed the worst war crimes and human rights violations throughout history. It led the public to take up arms against the military dictatorship in the Spring Revolution.

· In accordance with the guidance of Ministry of Education- NUG, the prize awarding ceremony for outstanding students was held along with educational funfairs at the public-based schools under supervision of the Tanintharyi Township Education Board.

· In Khin-U Township of Sagaing Region, there was a face-to-face meeting among local administration, defence forces and the public in two villages on Wednesday.

Revolutionary Activities

· Only 7 political prisoners were included in those who were released as part of an amnesty in Zay Mathwe Prison of Mon State.

· In commemoration of the Independence Day, over 1,000 prisoners from Mandalay Obo Prison will be released.

· According to a statement by the Burmese Women’s Union on Tuesday, 392 women have lost their lives due to the military junta and 541 others have been detained.

· In Hpakant of Kachin State, a combined rally marched against the military dictatorship on Thursday morning in commemoration of the 76th Independence Day.

· In Sagaing Region, Shwebo PDF conducted bomb attacks via drone on the junta armed forces including Wetlet Police Station.

· In Pale Township, the very first junta soldier from Inmati Pyusawti Village defected to Yinmabin District PDF, along with weapons. Reportedly, he was rewarded with 80 lakh MMK.

Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs)

· In Kokang District of Special Region (1) in Shan State, Lauk Kaing Administration in cooperation with local charity groups have conducted the rule of law, transportation and the environmental rules and regulations at No. (125) Border Post IDP Camp.

· In a statement on the 69th day of Operation 1027, the Arakan Army (AA) declared that they would fight and uproot all the junta camps in Rakhine State until there is no one left.

· In Paletwa Township of Chin State, the AA took control of the junta’s Chin Let Wa Camp. Reportedly, it was the 7th camp they have seized in the area.

· In Winemaw Township of Kachin State, all 7 junta soldiers including the pilot died as the Kachin Independence Army shot down a junta’s helicopter.

· On the morning of the Independence Day, Karen National Union (KNU) seized 8 junta camps on Yangon-Mandalay Former Highway near the town of Kanyutgwin.

· The US Foreign Minister called on the military junta from Myanmar to stop violence, release those in detention and go back to the path of democracy.

The Military Council

· The junta’s National Solidarity and Peacemaking Negotiation Committee (NSPNC) will reportedly have the third meeting with the Three Brotherhood of Northern Alliance in Kunmin of China.

· Ko Kaung Set Linn, the photo journalist from the Myanmar Pressphoto Agency who had been arrested after being knocked down by a military car in a protest in Yangon, was released from Insein Prison on Independence Day.

· To commemorate the 76th Independence Day, the military junta declared an amnesty on 9,652 prisoners.

· The military junta declared an amnesty on 114 foreigner prisoners and deported them.

· In a statement on Independence Day, the junta leader Min Aung Hlaing mentioned that the sample census had been collected starting on 1 October 2023 and they would proceed with the national census in 2024. He added that an election would be held upon completion of the voter list based on the census.

Summary on 5 January

· The junta leader Min Aung Hlaing keeps repeating that the election will be conducted. He has been trying to find an escape from hardships via it.

· The PDFs have become militarily powerful enough to capture junta personnel in battles on the ground.
