Representatives from the US Embassy in Thailand participated in a discussion concerning Myanmar migrant workers in Mae Sot, Tak Province, on the morning of 11 January, as reported by the Joint Action Committee on Burmese Affairs (JACBA).

The meeting took place at the New Day School office in Mae Sot.

“The primary focus is to address issues related to Burmese migrant workers in Mae Sot, which also encompasses concerns about child labour,” said Moe Gyo, the chairman of JACBA.

In the discussion led by officials from the US Embassy, five key points were covered, namely the present status of Burmese migrant workers in Thailand, the well-being of migrant workers in the border areas of Tak Province, particularly in Mae Sot, the situation of child labourers, the status of political asylum seekers, including those involved in the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), and an overview of the activities undertaken by the JACBA organization.

Moe Gyo mentioned that this meeting marked a significant milestone as it was the first time in 20 years that the US Embassy visited the JACBA organization for a discussion.

JACBA, situated in Mae Sot, Thailand, plays a crucial role in aiding Burmese migrant workers in addressing labuor rights violations and assists undocumented individuals in obtaining legal documents through negotiations with their Thai employers.

Furthermore, in the aftermath of the Myanmar military coup, the JACBA has been actively supporting PDF groups involved in the Spring Revolution.
