The junta extended its order prohibiting people from traveling or working on waterways in Kyaukpyu Township, Rakhine State, for a further two months, on 20 February.

Under the extended order, activities such as sailing and fishing by boats, anchoring by offshore fishing vessels, and gatherings along the shoreline involving alcohol consumption, singing, shouting, and wrestling are strictly prohibited.

The original order ran from 19 November 2023 to 19 February 2024. According to residents, whilst it was in force the junta unlawfully detained civilians and demanded ransoms for their release. The current order will run until 19 April 2024.

The Chinese government and the junta signed an agreement on 26 December 2023 to push forward with plans to establish a deep-sea port within a Special Economic Zone in Kyaukpyu Town.
