A violent crackdown following a riot at Myitkyina prison this afternoon resulted in at least four prisoners killed and 12 injured, according to sources within the prison department,

The riot reportedly began around 4:00 pm on April 18 and is ongoing as of this report.

Residents living near the prison told Mizzima they heard loud gunshots, banging on metal bars, and political songs emanating from the facility.

A source, unauthorized to speak with the media, stated that at least four prisoners were killed and twelve injured, with the injured being transported to Myitkyina hospital. Mizzima has been unable to independently verify this information with other sources.

The prison, located in Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State in northern Myanmar, houses approximately 4,000 inmates. The Kachin region has experienced decades of intermittent warfare between the Myanmar army and Kachin resistance forces.
