EU issues statement condemning Myanmar junta’s actions

Mizzima

The European Union (EU) issued a statement on 18 June 2024 to the Interactive dialogue on the situation of human rights of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar, held at the United Nations (UN) 56th Session of the Human Rights Council.

In the statement, the E.U. condemned the Myanmar junta and said that the role of the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) is key to ensuring justice and accountability for human rights abuses carried out in Myanmar.

Below is the statement in full:

Thank you Mr President,

The EU thanks the High Commissioner for his report and update.

The EU once again condemns the repressive actions of the Myanmar military. All violence against civilians must cease.

Conflict continues to escalate across Myanmar, causing untold suffering across the country.

In Rakhine state, the reported forced recruitment of Rohingya is further dividing communities, and bringing to the surface deep-seated ethnic tensions and mistrust, making it increasingly dangerous for all civilians.

Ensuring justice and accountability for all human rights violations and abuses, committed by any actor, is crucial.

In this regard, the role of the IIMM remains key.

We recall the International Court of Justice’s provisional measures order from 23 January 2020 and the urgent need for compliance with it, as well as relevant accountability efforts in the ICC [International Criminal Court] and through universal jurisdiction.

We welcome the appointment of the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Myanmar, Julie Bishop, and continue to call for greater leadership and coordination of the UN system on humanitarian efforts on the ground, including through the appointment of a UN resident coordinator.

The EU calls on all parties, in particular the Myanmar military, to allow the complete, safe and unhindered humanitarian access to all persons in need.

High Commissioner,

How instrumental is the flow of dual-use goods and jet fuel to committing human rights violations and abuses?
