The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and allied forces have taken control of Nawnghkio (Naungcho) Town and areas of Nawnghkio Township in northern Shan State.

On 25 June 2024 the TNLA and its allies started launching attacks on junta bases in the townships of Nawnghkio and Kyaukme in northern Shan State and Mogok and Madaya in neighbouring Mandalay Region.

On 26 June the TNLA and allied forces took control of Nawnghkio Town and the junta Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 115, according to the Mandalay People’s Defence Army.

It released photos showing the defence forces securing key positions, including the area in front of the toll gate at the town’s entrance and the office of the Myanmar War Veterans Association.

During the taking of Nawnghkio Town the TNLA claimed to have captured 17 junta soldiers from whom they seized 59 different types of weaponry and assorted ammunition, including two 60 mm mortars, six machine guns, two RPG-7 rockets, sniper rifles, pistols, mines, and grenades.

Following the seizure of Nawngkhkio Town, the defence forces intensified their operations against the remaining military bases outside the town, especially the junta’s LIB 114 base.

According to the TNLA in Nawngkhkio Township, it successfully took control of the junta camp in Ohnmakhar Village at about 10:00 am on 27 June, before taking control of the junta’s Field Artillery Battalion 606 base, also in Nawngkhkio Township, at 11:00 am the same day.

A Nawngkhkio Township resident said to Mizzima at 1:30 pm on 27 June: “Field Artillery Battalion 606 fell to the TNLA. We heard continuous small-arms fire, and the junta also conducted continuous airstrikes in the battle area. Now, a Junta surveillance plane is hovering over the township.”

As of 27 June, the TNLA said it was attacking junta troops at Aye Sati Pagoda in Mogok Township. TNLA and Mandalay PDF are also attacking the junta military camps of Military Operation Command 1, LIB 501 and LIB 502 in Kyaukme Township.
