Two junta military bases and the airport in Kalay Town, Sagaing Region were hit by a series of drone attacks launched by the Wings of Kalay drone force, on 6 May 2024.

They dropped nine bombs from drones on the morning of 6 May. In Kalay Town the Regional Military Command base was hit by two bombs. Supply and Transport Battalion 934, also in Kalay Town, was hit with three bombs and Kalay Town Airport was hit with four bombs as a supply helicopter was arriving.

“As we passed by the airport, the sound of the bomb exploding was unmistakable. We even noticed the Military Council troops stationed there were moving around with their firearms”, said a Kalay resident.

Following that, additional explosions were heard. The resident added that incoming passenger planes had been delayed rather than cancelled as a result of the attack.

In the aftermath of the attack security measures were heightened and junta soldiers were observed patrolling Kalay Town in armoured vehicles and randomly searching pedestrians.

Wings of Kalay said it was still trying to assess casualties and damage from the attacks but it could confirm that it had lost a drone and that all its members had been able to safely withdraw after the attacks without suffering any casualties or arrests.

Fighting is ongoing in the northern and southern areas of Kalay Township and the junta has been using airstrikes in those areas, according to local sources.

The drone attacks were carried out using fixed wing drones. Groups involved in the attack included: the Wings of Kalay Drone force, the Kalay Revolution Force (KRF), the Urban Planning (UG), and the Kalewa Township People’s Defence Force.
