Spring Revolution Daily News for 19 May 2024

The National Unity Government (NUG)

  • In Ye-U of Sagaing Region, a junta soldier from No. (7) Medical Unit, along with weapons, defected to the People’s Defence Force (PDF). Reportedly, he was rewarded 50 lakh MMK.
  • In the United States, the 30th Human Rights Event of Vietnam was conducted at Cannon House Office Building. Reportedly, Deputy Foreign Minister of the NUG U Moe Zaw Oo joined it.
  • Minister of Foreign Affairs-NUG and Minister of Planning, Finance and Investment-NUG were present at the 44th anniversary Gwangju Uprising, known in Korean as May 18. Reportedly, they had a friendly meeting with the Chair of the Democratic Party.
  • Regarding the junta’s airstrike on Wegyidaunk Hospital in Kyaukdaw Township, the Ministry of Health-NUG stated that they would bring back justice for the healthcare staff and they would also take serious legal action against the military junta and their associates.
  • On 19 May, the Union Ministers of the NUG will have a public meeting in South Korea.
  • Minister of Human Rights-NUG stated that there still has been violence against the LGBTs based on prejudice.
  • In the area under Gantgaw District PDF (13) in Magway Region, the PDF issued a local order containing 5 points including no gatherings without permission.
  • Minister of Defence-NUG stated that they would soon set up a mass force and get started with an offensive in the Myanmar plains.
  • The NUG called on the associates and the supporters of the military junta committing war crimes and crimes against humanity as well as killing the civilians to stop their activities.

Revolution Activities

  • In Yinmabin Township of Sagaing Region, the revolution forces conducted an ambush on the junta police on their way out to demand money from the public at Aung Zayya Hill. Reportedly, all 6 junta policemen including an officer died.
  • In Shwebo, there was an attack on the junta army stationed in Ward (5). Reportedly, 3 junta soldiers died.
  • In Eastern Yinmabin and Northern Salingyi, the medical team provided healthcare to the people from 2 IDP camps.
  • In Yinmabin North, a local rally named ‘Let’s Never Get Back in This Revolution’ marched against the military dictatorship on Saturday.
  • In Salingyi Township, a social group donated cold drinks to the displaced people.
  • In Myitkyina of Kachin State, the mortars fired by the junta army fell and exploded in a ward, killing 2 civilians.
  • In Dawei Township of Tanintharyi Region, the PDFs conducted a bomb attack via drone on the junta Military Operation Supervisory Headquarters in Thabyay Chaung Village while the junta officers were having a meeting.

Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs)

  • In Kanpetlet Township of Chin State, local CDF managed to rescue 38 displaced people arrested by the junta army.
  • In Buthidaung Township of Rakhine State, the Arakan Army seized all the junta army camps on Saturday and took control of the whole township.
  • While clearing the junta’s Ka-Ma-Ya (353) in Buthidaung Township, the AA managed to rescue 35 Rohingya people detained by the junta army without providing any food.
  • In Winemaw Township of Kachin State, the Kachin Independence Army conducted simultaneous attacks on the junta camps on Saturday morning. So far, they have seized no less than 4 junta army camps.

The Military Council

  • The junta Ministry of Education claimed that according to the 2019 Interim Population and Household Census, 4.1 million adults aged above 15 are illiterate in the country.
  • The junta Central Bank announced that they would sell 10 million Chinese Yuan to exporters and importers via an Online Trading Platform on 20 May.
  • On 14 May, there was the 6th meeting between the air forces of Myanmar and India in Naypyidaw.
  • In Naypyidaw, there was a coordination meeting on the full implementation of the Seeder System and the study of oil crops.

Summary on 19 May

  • The military junta had to let go of Buthidaung. They will also face the same in Kachin State. Consequently, the areas under their control have gradually declined.
