The Southern Border Army (SBA) announced that as of 15 December, it now controls parts of the Myeik to Kawthaung road in Tanintharyi Township.

In a statement issued on 18 December, the SBA said that it controlled an area that extended from the Myeik to Kawthaung Road to Yebyu Village, Taplat Village, and up to the Htonekha to Mawdaung Road.

A spokesperson for the Tanintharyi Township People’s Defense Force (PDF), Ko Star said: “Regular inspections of cars will be conducted. The primary objective is to raise awareness and assure people that we are not associated or affiliated with the Military Council.”

Having lost the area, junta forces are now firing heavy weapons at defence forces in Yebyu Village and the situation is tense.

Revolutionary forces have advised travelers to exercise caution and to cooperate at their security checkpoints on the road.

The SBA is a collaboration between defence forces operating in Tanintharyi Township. It was formed on 25 November 2023 and its members include the Kawhtoolei Army (KTLA), the Khutdaung Taman Special Column, and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

The Myeik to Kawthaung road is about 274 miles long and despite some parts being unmade it is a major route for cars in the area and connects Kawtahaung to the rest of the country.

The junta placed Tanintharyi Township under martial law in February 2022.
