Following his capture by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) Brigadier General Min Min Tun, the commander of Light Infantry Division (LID) 101, publicly called on the junta leader Min Aung Hlaing and his generals to stop committing war crimes.

He made the calls in a video that was released by the TNLA on the evening of 10 January.

In it, Brigadier General Min Min Tun said: “The Tatmadaw brutally arrests, kills, and imprisons ethnic people. It is also committing various war crimes, assaulting the public by launching airstrikes and firing heavy weapons. Thus, on behalf of civilians, I would like to urge the leaders committing war crimes, such as the Commander-in-Chief of the Army, Min Aung Hlaing, the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Army, and other military leaders, to stop [committing war crimes].”

He also apologised for the casualties and damage his orders had caused whilst he was the LID 101 commander in Namhsan Town in northern Shan State. He said he took full responsibility for the deaths of 12 people, injuries to a further 16 and the destruction of homes in Namhsan Town.

In the video the 48-year-old commander also said that the TNLA had treated him well and told his family not to worry.

Brigadier General Min Min Tu was captured on 16 December when the TNLA took control of Namhsan Town. He is the highest-ranking junta military officer to be captured by rebel forces.

He took control of LID 101 in September 2022.
