KIA sets up administration in Lwegel town, a sizeable Myanmar-China border trading town

The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) has issued a notice letter asserting control over the junta’s departmental offices in Lwegel Town on the China-Myanmar border in Kachin State.

Sources on the ground indicate the KIA are in full control of the administration.

A notice bearing the KIA logo and stating, “This place has been taken under control by KIA. No entry except authorized personnel,” was observed posted on the Military Council’s departmental buildings in Lwegel Town, as reported by residents on 4 April.

A resident of Lwegel said, “The KIA has now established its administration in the town, with KIA presence visible in numerous areas within the town.”

On 29 March, the KIA, along with joint forces, assumed control of Lwegel Town, capturing the police station and departmental offices without significant pushback from junta forces.

During this process, some junta troops, police officers, and staff from Military Council departmental offices fled to China, while others sought refuge in junta camps located on the outskirts of Lwegel Town, as per information from a KIA source.

The KIA has reportedly bolstered security not only in Lwegel Town but also at the border gate, having captured almost every junta camp along the Lwegel-Momauk Road and asserting dominance over the road.

Lwegel Town, one of the 10 trading gates with neighbouring countries established in 2002, has seen tightened inspection along the trade route for the safety of residents and tourists, as stated by KIA spokesperson Colonel Naw Bu.

In Kachin State, the KIA has seized over 60 junta camps, including the long-standing Seinlong Strategic Hill outpost, located on the Momauk-Lwegel route, amidst battles that commenced on 7 March.
