Three inmates who attempted to escape from Myaungmya Prison, Myaungmya Township, Ayeyarwady Region were recaptured around 5:30 pm on 18 April, according to sources close to the facility.

“Two of the inmates were in the process of scaling the prison’s brick wall, while the third had already reached the top when they were spotted by prison staff and subsequently apprehended,” a source close to the prison staff said.

The attempted escape occurred around 5:00 pm on 18 April, involving three individuals in their thirties.

Two of the prisoners were convicted in a drug case, and the other inmate sentenced in a separate case. These individuals had only recently arrived at Myaungmya Prison.

Former political prisoners at Myaungmya relayed information to Mizzima that rumors had circulated among police and Military Council personnel, suggesting that the escape attempt was spurred by the inmates’ dissatisfaction over not receiving amnesty from the junta.
