Summary of Myanmar fighting in first week of December 2023

Mizzima

The National Unity Government (NUG) has issued a summary of the clashes that occurred between the defence forces and the junta in the first week of December 2023.

Below is the NUG summary:

Late November and early December 2023 saw allied troops seize towns in the flatlands, increased guerilla warfare by the PDFs and allies, and the terrorist military relinquishing control of some of its encampments in Sagaing and Magway regions.

Local PDFs in Magway fought and won against the military council’s troops at weapon factory (1) and Battalion (101) command.

Similarly, the Chin National Army and Chin- based PDFs seized the town of Rezua in Chin State while many more military council’s encampments were seized and their battalions surrendered as a whole in the Kokang area.

PDFs have seized almost all military council’s encampments in Taze, Sagaing Region, and were close to taking over the town’s police stations but had to retreat as the terrorist Military Council’s forces launched multiple airstrikes and sent reinforcements.

The coordinated attack was led by the Shwebo District Command (1) with the combined forces of Shwebo District battalions (6/7/8/9/16/25), Taze Township PDFs and local PDFs. Taze is the base for many junta battalions including its Tank Battalion 6006 and is strategically located between Kanbalu and Ye-U.

Successfully seizing Taze would mean the People’s Defence Force was able to secure a win between two towns where Military Council troops are located.

The people’s defensive war is gaining momentum with the Military Council experiencing communication disruptions, attacks on its encampments, abandoning its bases, and reduced capacity to send out military columns.

Military Council’s forces retreated from Kanywa police station in Gangaw Township, Magway Region, and abandoned two Military Council soldiers who were in ill health.

Military Council soldiers and Pyu Saw Htee militias abandoned their bases in western Khin-U Township including Ywar Thit Gon Pyu village, Myin Daung Village, Muu Thein Creek, and Inn Pad Kwe Gate. They have relocated to Ye-U instead.

Military columns are also marching out less in Salingyi and Pale townships.

Elsewhere in Magway Region, the PRA (Magway) launched 20 rockets at the defense industry factory no. (20) located in Sidoktaya Township while the Burma Revolution Rangers fired two rockets at the enemy’s Battalion (101) in Pakokku.

On 29 November, the Chin National Army and Chin-based PDFs attacked the town of Rezua where about 60 junta soldiers were located and successfully seized it after four days. The town is located about 100 miles from the capital city of Hakha. This is the third successful takeover of a town in Chin State and resistance forces in Chin State will continue to encircle and seize other towns with enemy encampments.

Meanwhile, the junta’s Infantry Battalion (125) including its commander surrendered to resistance forces mid-battle in Konekyan, Kokang zone near the border with China. This resulted in 272 persons, including 86 family members, surrendering.

Similarly, on 12 November, the 260-strong Light Infantry Battalion (129) surrendered to resistance forces.

Entire battalions in the Kokang zone have begun surrendering since Operation 1027 was launched and the number of junta troops surrendering in other areas has increased as well.

In the Sino-Myanmar border trade township of Muse in Northern Shan State, The Ta’ang National Liberation Army seized the enemy’s base in Nampaw despite 26 airstrikes and 3 helicopter attacks by the Military Council’s forces. About 32 firearms were seized and 2 POWs were captured.

Elsewhere, in Southern Myanmar, resistance forces were able to attack Kawkareik and seize Taye Tamain Village police station in Waw Township, Bago Region.
