A junta artillery shell aimed at the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) Headquarters in Laiza, reportedly landed and detonated in Chinese territory, according to a source in Laiza.

It happened when junta troops at Hpun Pyen Bum military camp near Laiza Town opened fire on the KIA Headquarters in Laiza Town at 10 am on 6 December. At the time there was no other fighting in the area.

A Laiza Town resident said: “It [the junta artillery shell] indeed landed in China this time. People are discussing it on the WeChat group, mentioning that it landed near a car wash center. Fortunately, no one was injured.”

Previously, on 4 November, four artillery shells fired by Myanmar junta troops landed and exploded in China, resulting in the death of one Chinese national and injuries to two others. Surprisingly, there was no official response from the Chinese authorities regarding the incident.

Also, on 9 October, the Munglai Hkyet internally displaced people (IDP) camp near the the KIA headquarters was hit by a junta airstrike that killed 29 people, including children.

In retaliation for that attack, the KIA attacked and captured three junta military camps on the Myitkyina to Bhamo Highway. This led to an escalation in fighting between the KIA and the junta and the junta targeting the KIA headquarters in Laiza, which they continue to do.
