Defence forces capture Mawluu Town in Sagaing Region

Defence forces captured Mawluu Town in Indaw Township, Sagaing Region on 13 December, according to the All Burma Students’ Democratic Front North, (ABSDF – North), one of the groups involved in the attack.

At 2:30 a.m. on 13 December, a combined force made up of fighters from the ABSDF-North, the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and local people’s defence forces (PDFs) attacked the police station. By 6:30 a.m. they had taken control of the police station and were able to take control of Mawluu Town.

An ABSDF – North representative said: “We can confirm that we now hold Mawluu. Over 10,000 people are expected to flee the conflict. The intense four-hour battle, started at 2:30 am and concluded at 6:30 am, culminating in the occupation of the town. Throughout the engagement, there was heavy artillery fire from the Junta’s Field Artillery Regiment 904 based in Moehnyin Town.”

He said that of the 30 soldiers and police officers who had been in the police station, seven died, two were captured and the rest fled. A significant number of weapons were also seized from the police station.

There were no casualties amongst the defence forces.

Following the capture of the police station a junta fighter jet dropped two bombs on Mawluu Town at 7:20 a.m. on 13 December, but fortunately, one of the bombs failed to explode.

ABSDF – North said that it will release a full report on the attack with visual documentation, once clearance operations have finished in Mawluu Town.
