27 undocumented Myanmar nationals were arrested in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai by the Thai Immigration Department on 13 May 2024.

They were arrested in surprise raids on six properties being rented by Myanmar nationals in Chiang Mai’s Muang and Chang Khlan districts.

The arrested were taken to Chiang Mai Police Station and will be dealt with in accordance with the law, according to the Thai Immigration Department.

The raids were part of a Thai operation aimed at finding, detecting and questioning illegal immigrants in Thailand. The Thai police force has also launched an operation to eradicate Thai-based international criminal gangs from northern Thailand.

Since the Myanmar junta re-introduced conscription in February 2024 many people of conscription age have fled from Myanmar to Thailand. But, not all of those fleeing have the necessary documentation to remain in Thailand and the Thai authorities have said they are searching houses, apartments, workplaces and factories to find and arrest illegal aliens from Myanmar.
